Campaigns | Ramadan 2018 - Every Meal Together

Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar has arrived once again. It is a time to pause and reflect on all the things that pass us by in our day to day busy lives, but more importantly, Ramadan is a time to remember those less fortunate, and lend a helping hand to support them.

This year, Syrians will be marking their 8th Ramadan living in a state of war. Ramadan in Syria was once a month of joy, as streets and homes were lavishly decorated, and evenings were spent gathering with extended family and friends for an evening feast. Today, many Syrian families find themselves separated through death and destruction, living in different cities and countries, and for many of those who are yet to leave, food is scarce and hard to find

At Hand in Hand for Syria, we know how important Ramadan is to the people of Syria, which is why each year we work round the clock during the holy month to ensure that families in need are fed throughout the month.

WHAT WE’RE DOING THIS RAMADAN

FOOD KITCHENS

For the past couple of years, we’ve opened a pop-up food kitchen in different parts of Syria each Ramadan, where we cook fresh, nutritious meals for families in need.

Our food kitchens are very popular, especially in areas without electricity (where people struggle to cook) or where there are food shortages - this means families can break their fast with a nutritious, warm evening meal.

Cooked Meat Ramadan 2018

You can provide a cooked meal for an entire family in Syria for just £4 per day

FOOD BASKETS

In some areas in Syria, food baskets are more popular. Our food baskets contain all the food staples (such as pasta, oil, rice) that a family needs to feed them for an entire month.

PAY YOUR ZAKAT

Ramadan is one of the best times of year to pay Zakat, so if you’ve got Zakat to pay this year, why not pay it to Syria? Your donation will go a long way towards helping those in need.

Ramadan 2018

Fidyah and Kaffarah payments We are also accepting Fidya and Kaffarah payments this Ramadan, these are calculated at £2.50 per person, per day.

WHAT IS RAMADAN?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic year, and the holiest month of the Islamic year. During the month of Ramadan, able-bodied Muslims from around the world fast from food and water, from dawn until sunset, in an act of worship. The month of Ramadan is a very spiritual time, where people often dedicate time for extra prayers, good deeds and donating money to charity.

How can a non-Muslim get involved in Ramadan?

Many non-Muslims around the world enjoy joining in on the festivities of the month, whether it's joining or hosting a Muslim family for the evening Iftar meal, or even taking part in fasting themselves. Over the years we've had many non-Muslim fundraisers who have taken in a Ramadan Fasting challenge, where they ask friends and family to sponsor them to fast for the entire month of Ramadan, then donate the proceeds to feed families in Syria.

If fasting sounds a little tough, and hosting a meal isn't an option for you - you can always donate to feed families in Syria, less effort - huge impact!
