Saying goodbye to a local hero; Dr Hassan Al Arag

Friday, April 15, 2016
It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of Dr Hassan Al-Arag, the director of the Hama Health Directorate yesterday.

Dr Hassan was killed in an air strike whilst doing humanitarian work in his home town of Hama. He risked his life to remain in Syria and continue to save the lives of others, despite many others in his field leaving the country in search of safety. Dr Hassan even opened his own private clinic up to the public to offer them treatment as the war developed. A selfless individual, he was an invaluable asset to the medical sector in Syria and his passing will no doubt be a great loss to not just his colleagues, but to the medical sector in Syria as a whole.

As a humanitarian organisation with a number of projects in the medical field, we have a great respect for doctors and the vital role they play in enabling medical facilities to remain functioning during the war. Their selflessness and commitment to their work enables us to continue to expand our medical projects and help provide medical care to hundreds of thousands of people who would be left without medical care otherwise.

We strongly condemn the continued targeting of medical centres and attacks against their staff and would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of Dr Hassan during this difficult time.
